Double Bill of Baroque Opera: Henry Purcell's "Dido & Aeneas" and Antonio Caldara's "A Game of Cards"
June 23, 2012
Mass Theatrica is featuring a fun and affordable new double bill of opera set in present day Cambridge, MA at the Cambridge YMCA Durrell Theatre, 820 Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square! Henry Purcell's classic opera "Dido & Aeneas" and a WORLD PREMIERE of the English translation of Antonio Caldara’s "Il Giuoco del Quadriglio" ("A Game of Cards") by Cambridge's own Martha Birnbaum.
Both operas will be presented in English and in modern settings. Dido & Aeneas will even be set in Cambridge! Viewers will recognize Harvard Square and the Charles River, and be able to see the unfolding of love, hope, and disappointment in a recognizable setting.
Il Giuoco del Quadriglio (A Game of Cards), is a comic piece in which four ladies play cards and hilariously “dish the dirt” Real Housewives style in intricate and joyful Baroque musical style, will have its world premiere at the Cambridge YMCA (Durrell) Theatre in a new English translation by the Stage Director, Martha Birnbaum, a Cambridge resident.
Starring Angeliki Theoharis as Dido, Thom Kenney as Aeneas, Kaori Emery as Belinda, and featuring Wendy Parker, Beth Grzegorzewski, Mary Clark, Linsay Conrad, Lara Fox, Deborah Grose, Tara Alcorn, John Deschene, Brad Amidon, Art Dunlap and Lyman Opie. Music Director/Piano, Jenny Tang, Mina Kim, Cello, Anya Shemetyeva and Jessica Bergeraggi, violin. Stage Director Martha Birnbaum.
The location of the Durrell Theater (inside the Central Square YMCA) in Cambridge is both MBTA and wheelchair accessible.
