Fred Lerdahl's music is all about variation: building colorful, complex soundscapes from small melodic ideas. A Guggenheim fellow and composition professor at Columbia, he has had a tremendous impact as a composer and as an accomplished scholar and theorist. His three acclaimed string quartets, written over a span of three decades from 1978-2008, were expressly intended to be performed as a cycle.
