For Beethoven’s birthday we offer two works. The clarinet trio is a fresh, spontaneous and charming work, with no illusions of grandeur and the bright Spring Sonata is perfect preparation for the apocalyptic vision of the Book of Revelations that follows. Written for his fellow prisoners of war and premiered before an audience of 5,000 other inmates, Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time is perhaps the most significant piece of music to come out of the experience of World War II.
