Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre

Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre is a professional ballet performing company and a ballet school located in the heart of Harvard Square, Cambridge. Founded in 1986, Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre's company and school have forged a new model for a ballet organization through innovative programming, artistic excellence, and extensive community outreach. Critically acclaimed, Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre is distinguished as the only ballet company in New England to produce an entire repertory by it's own resident choreographer. The school, which provides expert dance training to young dancers ages 3-18 and adults of all ages and levels, has been a leader in creating broader access to the art form. It has developed an inclusive approach with new teaching methods that allow students to excel beyond expectation.

      I have a dance and choreography background and I was disappointed. From reading the description it sounded great so I bought tickets as a present for my mother in law who is also a dance lover and she hated it. The best part was the live piano playing before the dances and during the intermissions. I also loved the cabaret seating and intimate setting, but that's about as far as it went. The choreography did not go with the music and the concepts of the pieces or storyline did not make sense or come through. With very few exceptions, the choreography was very classical, set to moody, dark music. It just didn't match and the choreography had awful musicality. The dancers have great technique, but their talent is being wasted. Their performances were mostly robotic, but that could be due to bad direction. I have never seen a Jose Mateo show and expected more from them considering their reputation in the Boston area. Collapse
