Cantata Singers’ 52nd season commences with a program led by world-renowned choral conductor Joseph Flummerfelt. Hear choral favorites such as Brahms’ charming Liebeslieder Waltzes and Copland’s “The Promise of Living” alongside diverse works by Barber, Britten, Duruflé, Stravinsky, Victoria, Casals, Russell, and Fine. “Dr. Flummerfelt has chosen a beautiful and intimate program of sacred choral music, American songs, and Brahms’ Liebeslieder Walzer, works rarely presented by Cantata Singers,” said Music Director David Hoose. “This program will give our audience the chance to experience the unique musical perspective he brings to the podium.”
Dr. Flummerfelt is the longtime choirmaster of the NY Philharmonic, Artistic Director of the Spoleto Festival, and is the former director of the choral program at Westminster Choir College.

What happened to Mr. Joy? A Harlem community is disrupted when a Chinese immigrant’s shoe repair shop, a neighborhood pillar for decades, does not open its doors. Playwright and artist-in-residence Daniel Beaty (Breath & Imagination, Emergency), returns with another moving reflection on transforming pain into power, this time through the lens of nine shop customers. Tangela Large performs them all—from eleven-year-old Clarissa, to a budding shoe designer, to “gangsta granny” Bessie. Together, they reflect on the shop owner’s impact on their lives, and discover how a community can learn to heal in order to dream again.

Now Judy Garland is spending the evening with some of her her favorite gal pals! Those dropping by may include Mae West, Elaine Stritch, Carol Channing, Liza Minnelli, Tallulah Bankhea, Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, and/or anyone of more than 50 women Mac portrays, making for a new show every week. The show has Peter Mac performing all roles as the iconic ladies of yesteryear.
